Internationally renowned photographer Daniel J. Cox wants people to see what he sees. Whether he’s behind the camera in Alaska or Kenya, the Arctic or Amazonian Ecuador, he captures incredible photos of rare wildlife and the scientists who document them.
“For me, photography of the natural world is more than just pretty settings and cuddly animal pictures,” Cox says. “It's a concern for the environment and the Earth all living creatures share.”
But his career hasn’t always been easy. Cox realized early on that it would be difficult to make a living. Since working with HP Designjet Z Series Photo Printers, he has found a way to succeed while combining his professional pursuits with his passions. Plus, he’s rediscovered his original motivation to photograph nature.
“I’ve been able to go back to what initially started driving me—the desire to promote an interest in the planet we live on and the special places we have left,” Cox says. “It’s been extremely rewarding to return to my original roots.”

Cox is a perfectionist. He demands the highest image quality with every print, whether he’s printing for his business, Natural Exposures Inc., or one of the conservation or nonprofit organizations he supports. And the results he used to receive from print labs rarely lived up to his standards. Inconsistent image quality, problems with time and overall cost made it difficult for his business to succeed.
Today, Cox uses HP Designjet Z Series Photo Printers, because they deliver the quality and consistency he can rely on and the ideal prints he desires. Thanks to an expanded color gamut, his images can now reveal a level of detail that meets his critical standards. When he prints on HP media, such as HP Professional Satin Photo Paper, he knows his images will resist fading for generations.1 In addition to providing greater control over the end product, printing in-house enables him to capture a higher profit than when he was outsourcing.
“With the ability to make prints right in our studio on HP printers, we’re actually able to make money,” Cox says. “I’m excited by the color quality, richness and detail we can produce. The prints from the HP Designjet Z3200 look better than ever.” The HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer offers improved quality and consistency, including: | - Rich color saturation, using the HP 12-ink printing system with HP Vivera pigment inks
- Long-lasting, water-resistant color that resists fading for more than 200 years, using HP Vivera pigment inks1
- Consistent color, thanks to HP DreamColor Technologies and embedded spectrophotometer with i1 color technology2

As the lead photographer for Polar Bears International (PBI), Cox travels to the Arctic with scientists, using photography to document their efforts and adventures. When he returns home, he creates high-quality educational posters to be displayed in zoos nationwide. He trusts the job to HP Designjet Z Series Photo Printers.
Cox achieves consistent color between his posters and fine art prints, using HP DreamColor Technologies. He has complete control over print settings and, thanks to automated ICC profiling, ink, paper and image combinations are a snap.
“There are lots of benefits to doing it yourself,” Cox explains. “Once you get set up, all your monitors calibrated and your color profiles put together, printing is an absolute breeze compared to what it used to be.”
Recognizing the importance and vision of his photography, HP collaborated with Cox to present his PBI work at the 2008 PhotoPlus Expo in New York. The HP Fine Art Photo Gallery’s Arctic Environment section at the event featured his captivating images printed on the HP Designjet Z3200 Photo Printer. In addition, the HP Indigo 5500 digital press was used to create high-quality photo books with the exact same colors as his fine art prints and educational posters. Cox appreciates the print quality and environmental benefits of HP Indigo digital presses, including how on-demand printing reduces the amount of overruns and wasted prints.
“HP Indigo digital printing delivers quality that’s certainly equal to or better than any traditional books I’ve done in the past,” Cox says. “Plus, by printing books on the HP Indigo 5500, I can help promote their environmentally conscious story.”
Also at the PhotoPlus Expo, HP used the Scitex TJ8500 printer to create a backlit display, which brought Cox’s and PBI’s efforts to life for event-goers.

Like Cox, HP is committed to the environment. HP leads efforts to reduce environmental impact and embrace global responsibility. Also, HP helps customers to lessen their impact on the environment through worldwide recycling initiatives and other global citizenship efforts. Using HP Designjet Z Series Photo Printers, Cox can effectively share his passion for the environment, and together, Cox and HP can make a difference in peoples’ lives.
“If people can find enthusiasm for nature photography and the outdoors, I think it really leads to a better quality of life,” Cox says. “Even if they know they’re never going to get to some of the truly wild places I go, conservation photography allows them to know that these special natural areas still exist and, with human support will continue to be around for generations to come.”
